Together with the Autism Society of PEI, Charlottetown Airport is hosting a mock travel day inspired by the program, Autism Aviators, developed by the Halifax International Airport Authority and Autism Nova Scotia. This program aims to ease the travel process for individuals on the autism spectrum. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects brain development in 1 of every 68 children. Because individuals with autism have different responses to sensory stimulation and dislike unfamiliar situations or breaks from their daily routines, it can present challenges when it comes to air travel. By getting comfortable with airport processes (without actually leaving the airport), individuals with ASD along with their families can gain the familiarity and confidence they need to take future trips.
Participants will get to experience airport processes first hand including check-in, security screening, and waiting in the departures lounge (no actual travel will take place). Autism Aviator’s is for individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families who have upcoming travel plans or those who are seriously considering traveling in the near future.
The event will take place on Saturday, October 28 from 9am – 11am. For more information or to participate, email Nathalie Walsh at nathalie@autismsociety.pe.ca.
