Charlottetown Airport Authority Launches Comprehensive Climate Risk Assessment to Enhance Resilience

Charlottetown, PE – Charlottetown Airport Authority (CAA) today announced the commencement of a comprehensive Climate Risk Assessment and Adaptation Plan, demonstrating its commitment to proactive environmental stewardship and ensuring the long-term resilience of its operations. This initiative underscores the airport’s dedication to mitigating the potential impacts of climate change on its infrastructure, operations, and the surrounding community.

The Atlantic region is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including sea-level rise, extreme weather events, temperature fluctuations, and changing precipitation patterns. This study will assess the current and future climate risks to airport infrastructure, operations, and safety, and develop an adaptation strategy to mitigate these risks. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure YYG Charlottetown Airport can adapt to the challenges posed by a changing climate and continue to provide critical transportation services to Prince Edward Island.

“As a vital transportation hub, YYG Charlottetown Airport recognizes the importance of understanding and addressing the potential impacts of climate change,” said Shelley Christian, VP, Operations. “This climate risk assessment will provide us with valuable insights to inform our long-term planning and ensure we can continue to provide safe and reliable service to our passengers and the community.”

CAA will be working with a consultant that has expertise in climate risk assessment. The assessment will:

  • Evaluate the potential economic and social impacts of climate change.
  • Identify vulnerabilities in the airport’s infrastructure and operations.
  • Develop adaptation strategies to enhance the airport’s resilience.

The outcome of the project will be a comprehensive climate adaptation plan that identifies key vulnerabilities and outlines specific actions to mitigate climate-related risks. This plan will serve as a strategic roadmap to safeguard airport operations, minimize disruptions, and support its long-term sustainability in the face of evolving climate challenges.

This project is made possible through the financial support of the Government of Canada and the Government of Prince Edward Island under the Climate Challenge Fund.
