Charlottetown Airport Renamed the Charlottetown Alexander B. Campbell Airport

Charlottetown, PEI – The Charlottetown Airport Authority is proud to announce that the Charlottetown Airport has been officially renamed the Charlottetown Alexander B. Campbell Airport, following an announcement made today by the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.

The renaming honours the legacy of Alexander B. Campbell, Prince Edward Island’s longest-serving Premier, who held office from 1966 to 1978. During his twelve years in government, Premier Campbell championed economic development, modernized provincial infrastructure, and worked to strengthen PEI’s connections to the rest of Canada — values that remain at the heart of what this airport does every day.

“We fully support the decision to rename the airport in honour of Alexander B. Campbell,” said Doug Newson, Chief Executive Officer of the Charlottetown Airport Authority. “Premier Campbell’s leadership played a defining role in shaping modern Prince Edward Island, and it is fitting that one of the province’s principal gateways will bear his name. As a vital community asset and a key connector for Islanders, visitors, and businesses alike, the airport reflects the pride and respect felt across Prince Edward Island for Premier Campbell’s enduring legacy and his contributions to public service.”

Premier Campbell was sworn in as Premier at the age of 32, making him one of the youngest Canadians ever to hold the office. He led his party to four consecutive electoral victories, was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Canada in 1967, and was appointed to the provincial Supreme Court following his retirement from politics in 1978. In 2013, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

The Charlottetown Airport Authority looks forward to honouring Premier Campbell’s legacy through the continued growth and development of the airport that now bears his name.
