Charlottetown, PE – YYG Charlottetown Airport released 2022 passenger numbers today, highlighting a strong year for the recovery of air travel on Prince Edward Island. Over the past 12 months, 341,649 passengers travelled through the airport to more non-stop destinations than ever before. This number equates to almost 90% of 2019 levels, with every month from June to October producing record numbers for YYG.
“Coming off two very challenging years for our airport, it is gratifying to see such a strong rebound in air travel, largely driven by our Island’s world-class tourism product”, says YYG Charlottetown Airport CEO, Doug Newson. “We are extremely grateful to our airline partners, who offered flights to several new destinations in 2022. We look forward to working with the air carriers in an effort to provide the service levels that our users and stakeholders are looking for.”
The past year saw the entrance of one new airline partner, Swoop, to the Charlottetown market, offering flights to Toronto, Hamilton, and Edmonton. YYG is expecting full details on summer 2023 schedules to be announced in the coming weeks.
YYG Initiates Air Terminal Building Expansion
To keep up with current and projected passenger movements, the Airport Authority Board of Directors recently approved a significant terminal expansion that will increase capacity and provide a more efficient and enjoyable experience for our passengers, tenants, and partners. The $20 million project, which will take a phased approach over the next four years, will be essential to ensure we can continue to grow air service and help support our local economy.
“This is an exciting time for YYG and our partners as we get set to embark on a sustainable expansion that we believe Islanders will be proud of”, says Newson.
“We look forward to continuing to deliver on our mission of providing a convenient, modern, and sustainable airport that connects people and drives economic growth in PEI”.
YYG is pleased to announce the contract for architectural and engineering design services has been awarded to Charlottetown based architectural firm, SableARC, that is focused on sustainable design services.
“We’re excited to help create the ‘wow’ impression that will welcome people to YYG Charlottetown Airport,” says Robert Haggis, SableARC Founder and Principal Architect. “We look forward to working with the Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc. and our local partners to create a facility that will be sustainable in terms of accommodating the projected traffic growth with ease and as an ecologically sound design and build.”
